CHRIS BERTISH

“I’m a pretty normal guy like everyone else facing the usual problems and hurdles we have to deal with to get by in life.

I’m not a full-time paid surfing professional athlete.

I run my own business and work a full-time job, while trying to train and surf when ever I get the chance and compete internationally, when I can afford the time and the flights.

I just have a really strong passion and desire to ride big waves and travel all over the world in my spare time.

I’m really goal-orientated and focused on what I want to achieve. I know if you truly believe in something and you set your sights on anything and are determined and focused enough, you can achieve anything…”

RODRIGO KOXA

Rodrigo Koxa is from Guaruja, Brazil and began surfing at the age of 8. He competed until age 15 when, after a trip to Puerto Escondido, Mexico, he turned to big wave surfing.

Since then he has dedicated his life to big waves, surfing consecutive seasons in Mexico, Hawaii, Indonesia, Tahiti, Rapanui and California. It was in Tahiti 2006, along with his partner Victor Faria that his dreams turned into reality when he surfed giant Teahupoo.

In November 2008 he surfed one of the biggest swells in Mavericks’ history and has continued to return since. Koxa’s passion for wave model reading has enabled him to chase gigantic waves around the globe year round.

In August 2010, Rodrigo Koxa surfed the biggest wave ever seen in Chile. This tidal wave was estimated to be 50 to 60 feet on the face; said to be the biggest wave ever surfed in South America. Because of this wave, koxa is a favorite in the XXL awards 2011.

ALEX MARTINS

“I was born in Recife, Brazil, started surfing when I was 12 and quickly got into surf competition. I kept going until I was touring on the professional circuit and traveling around the world. However, living as a professional surfer in my hometown was difficult. In 1993 I moved to California for a change and got into surfing uncrowded, cold, heavy waves.

In 2000 I began practicing Ashtanga yoga and it became a regular part of my life. I completed the 200-hour teacher training withClayton Horton and have studied with Sri Pattabhi Jois, Tim Miller, Richard Freeman, Ana Forrest and David Swenson. I practice Ashtanga yoga in the mysore-style with Catherine Shaddix five days a week and surf most days.

I have dedicated myself to surfing and Ashtanga yoga and I feel the combination has gotten me in the best shape of my life. This made me feel more confident and prepared to challenge big waves. In 2003 I was named an alternate for the 2003/04 Mavericks Surf Contest. That year I was also nominated in the Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards for a paddle-in wave I caught at Mavericks. In 2006 I was invited to surf the Mavericks Contest which was an honor and the ultimate achievement of my surfing and yoga dedication.

I have remained on the alternate list for the Mavericks Surf Contest and in 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons was the first alternate. Conditions did not permit the contest in 2008/09 but the contest was held on February 13, 2010 and I was in, replacing Brock Little who was injured. In my first heat, I caught the two biggest waves of my life, won my heat and made it through to the semi finals. My first wave was nominated for the Billabong XXL Monster Paddle Award. I placed fourth in the semi finals and it was a dream come true to place so well and catch some of the biggest waves of the day, on the biggest day paddled in the history of surfing.”
